It’s a worst-case scenario for any driver – you’re stranded on a deserted road with no immediate help in sight. The situation is amplified if it’s in the middle of winter. If you aren't prepared, you can end up in a dangerous situation.

Every vehicle should have a vehicle emergency kit so the driver is always ready for car breakdowns or bad weather. No matter where you are or how often you drive, it’s important to ensure that you and your passengers are prepared.

The Canadian Government recommends that everyone outfit their vehicle with the supplies needed to survive 72-hours in extreme weather-related conditions. You could need extra items in your vehicle emergency kit depending on your geography as well. For example, you may need a compass, local emergency contact numbers, and any medications you are taking.

When preparing your vehicle emergency kit, you can choose to build it yourself, or purchase one at a retailer. If you decide to buy one, make sure you go through it and tailor the kit to your needs. If you choose to build one yourself, refer to the list below for items to include.
