Even though winter does not officially arrive until December 21st, autumn weather can be unpredictable in Ontario. Drivers have already seen significant snowfall in many parts of the province. If you find yourself driving during a snowstorm, here are 4 simple ways to stay safe on the roads this winter.

4 SIMPLE WAYS TO STAY SAFE ON THE ROADS

1. DRIVE SLOWLY

When there is lots of snow and ice on the ground, driving at a slower speed can help your tires gain traction and control on the road. It's true when they say slow and steady wins the race.

2. KEEP A SAFE DISTANCE

A distance of two seconds between you and the vehicle in front is recommended for normal driving conditions. Increasing this space when driving in winter weather will help give you time to stop or react suddenly.

3. KEEP YOUR VEHICLE IN MOTION

Avoid stopping on snow and/or ice when possible. Keeping a steady pace when turning or approaching a light can help your vehicle maintain momentum and prevent you from getting stuck. Just be sure to follow the local traffic laws.

4. INSTALL WINTER TIRES

You should consider changing to winter tires in order to benefit from the increased traction, braking and handling they provide. Winter tires are not only designed to perform in snowy conditions, but perform better on cold, dry pavement, too.
